Greenock back to school bash- august 26, 2014. It was awesome to see so many of my kids! I missed you soooo much! I was so busy saying hello that I forgot to take many pictures. But I did snap a few of our awesome garden!

About 12 years ago while at the middle school I formed a great relationship with the food pantries from Central, Elizabeth Baptist, and Round Hill. 6 years ago we took the food drive district-wide and the results have been amazing. Last year alone we donated over 25,000 items and $2000.00. Our local food pantries are currently serving over 500 families, most with at least one child. These are our friends and neighbors. Our theme this year is "Share What You Can". If you are able to donate food or money, please participate in our drive. If you are need of food for your table, please do not hesitate to contact one of our food pantries so that they can help. All help is anonymous and each pantry can also link you with additional resources if you need them. Please email me if you need more information. All requests are completely confidential.

Jon Klassen is a Canadian animator as well as writer and illustrator of children’s books. He won the 2013 Caldecott Medal for illustration for This Is Not My Hat, a follow up to the hip picture book favorite for the Tumblr generation of new parents, I Want My Hat Back.
Mac Barnett studied with David Foster Wallace before becoming one of the most hilarious authors in children’s books. In addition to Klassen, Mac has worked with illustrators like Jon Scieszka, Chris Van Dusen, and Adam Rex. Together with Rex, Barnett created the Brixton Brothers series – a hysterical twist on the boy detective genre.
The presentation at our school will be live streamed to other districts throughout Allegheny County. Our second graders will have the opportunity to ask questions at the presentation in our library!
If you are interested in seeing Mr. Barnett and Mr. Klassen at the Carnegie Library in Oakland on Sunday, October 26 please let me know- I have tickets and would love to share them!

It's the night before school and all through the town
Every student lies down with a smile, not a frown.
They know that tomorrow they'll walk into school
with no troubles or worries, it all will be cool!
With a smile from their teacher and a hug from ms. Mel
They'll get off the bus with a cheer and a yell!
Hi Teachers! hey friends! Hi Miss Pat and Miss Claire!
Hi helpers and nurses, we knew you'd be there!
New classrooms and posters, new pencils and pens
New teacher, new rules and of course some new friends.
Please don't be nervous, please don't you fret.
Tomorrow will be great, do I promise? You bet.
So now go to bed and may each dream be sweet,
tomorrow get dressed and get shoes on those feet!
you don't need to worry or fear, no never
for tomorrow we start the best year Ever!
Sleep tight! I love each of you!
Members of the Mon-Valley Shipmates came to share ways that we can honor our flag with our 5th graders. The fifth grade students were exceptionally respectful as they listened and asked some thoughtful questions.

Mrs. Vuick's math cafe
Our fourth graders were in for quite a surprise when they walked into their math class this year! The room was redesigned over the summer after Mrs. Amy Vuick's vision came to fruition with the assistance of our Assistant Superintendent Dr. Todd Keruskin and our Technology Director Mrs. MaryBeth Wiseman. Rows of desks were replaced with tables that you can write on. There is a help desk, a Swap Spot collaborative thinking area, and the plain walls are now vibrant and energizing. iPads are used to allow each student to explore every area of the 4th grade curriculum at their level. While some students need some extra practice and others are fine at the pace of instruction, there are others who are ready to go deeper with concepts. Using programs like Manga High and Kahn Academy our kids are filling their mugs at their pace!
Kindergarten gets a new 3-d Printer!!!!!!!

Check out the new 3-D Printer that arrived in Mrs. Estadt's Kindergarten classroom today! The kids have been learning about 3-D shapes and were introduced to a special app last week that taught them how to design 3-D shapes. Little did they know that a big box wrapped with a big bow would arrive in their room! The 3-D printer creates actual objects from bracelets to ornaments! Its amazing. Click the video below to see how a 3-D printer works!
Check back here for examples of what the kids are creating! Thanks to Mrs. Wiseman, Dr. Keruskin and Ms. Pletcher for helping us get set up and for making the printer possible!
