Onomatopoeia

I taught middle school reading at EFMS for 4 awesome years. I gave a final every year to be sure that what I had taught throughout the year STUCK! To help the kids remember different terms I would use songs or mnemonics. One of the literary terms the kids had to know was onomatopoeia. It was a weird word and I also wanted them to learn how to spell it, so I put the word to music and would sing it to "Old MacDonald". For YEARS I would see one of my kids and they would sing it to me. They still do sometimes..... and let me tell you it has been awhile. Many of my old kids now have kids at GO and MV!

Our second graders made onomatopoeia pictures to hang in the hallways and I had to share. See guys, it's still important!

As you can imagine, there is a lot that happens in a classroom. Sometimes a lesson or class discussion is moving in an awesome direction and RING! Someone calls the classroom for something. There are many teachers who have a classroom helper assigned to the phone, so they will teach the children how to properly answer in a business-like manner.

Yesterday I had to call Mrs. Fleckenstein. She thought it would be a good time for a teachable moment! She had coached the students to say, "Hello, Mrs. Fleckenstein's room, this is _______." She thought she would have one of her first graders give it a shot. He picked up the phone. "Hello, Mrs. Fleckenstein's room, this is ______..." I started to tell the student what a great job they did answering but they were gone! Mrs. Fleck called back later to tell me that she failed to tell the kids they had to keep talking after their greeting! The student just answered and hung up!

Just another reminder that you can never be too clear with directions!

I'm lucky enough to be in almost every classroom every day, even if just to peek in for a minute. When other visitors come they love to see what the kids are up to as well. Dr. Rocco was at Greenock today and I was showing him some of the things the teachers were doing with the kids. In kindergarten they were learning all about Constitution Day. Mrs. Tiberio's class was busy working on creating some really cute hats when we stopped in. I thought it would be nice for them to tell Dr. Rocco what they were doing so I asked "Boys and girls what day is it today?"

A group of 4 or 5 of the kids answered first without missing a beat, "It's hump dayyy!"

Another student corrected them, "No it's OVER the hump day!" With a little prompt they remembered they did remember it was Constitution Day. Oh the power of commercials.

This week our Greenock nurse had a visitor who gave her quite a scare! The little boy walked into her office and exclaimed, "My head really hurts, I got hit by a car last night."

"You got hit by a car? What happened???" she said.

"Well I have a big bump on my head where the car hit me and it's really hurting."

The nurse continued to ask some questions to get to the bottom of things and determine what she would do. Finally the rest of the story came out. "My little sister and I were playing cars and she took the car and bopped me on the head with it!"

Phew!

The kids were getting off of the bus today and noticed that the sidewalk in front of Greenock had been salted. One of the children stopped in their tracks when they stepped off the bus, afraid to take another step. "WHOA! Wait, do they spread ice or salt here???" Once he learned it was salt he resumed his regularly scheduled sprint into the building.

So they other day one of the kids was walking in the hall. She came over for a hug. "You smell like Bob Evans!" I must have looked at her with kind of a blank look. "It's my favorite!" she said.

I'm returning the perfume I got for Christmas!

A parent relayed this story to me and gave me permission to share.
Child: Mom is "effer" a bad word?
Mom: Well, yes honey, it can be.
Child: Well my teacher says it at school all the time.
Mom: (Period of extended silence....) What do you mean?
Child: Well she keeps telling us that we have to give our best effer on our homework and tests and stuff.

Thanks to staff and students who put forth their best EFFORT each and every day. And to parents who are there to clarify- just in case.

After our flag raising ceremony this morning the Greenock children quietly and thoughtfully strolled to the side of the building and entered through doors that would lead them past the many stars decorated with names of friends or relatives who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

One of the children asked, "Is that our American Legion at the door?"
"Sweetie did you say American Legion?"
"Well, American leader, is that our American leader holding the door. Right there," she pointed.
I looked....there holding the door for the children was Dr. Keruskin. If you have never met Dr. K he is pretty tall, especially if you are under 4 feet like most of our munchkins!
"Oh honey, that is Dr. Keruskin our assistant superintendent!"
"Ohhhhhhhhhh. So not American leader?"
